Daniel Oliva, 21, was charged with driving while intoxicated, as well as failure to obey a stop sign and failure to use a turn signal. He was held in custody and will appear in court May 12.
A Darien officer in an unmarked police car saw Oliva driving erratically eastbound on West Avenue at 3:18 a.m. Friday, police said. Oliva slowed and stopped 20 feet ahead of an intersection while waiting for a light to turn green, police said.
The officer followed him onto Mechanic Street, where Oliva rapidly sped up and slowed down repeatedly, according to police reports. The officer then saw Oliva go through a stop sign without stopping or using a turn signal, and pulled him over on Old Kings Highway North, police said.
Oliva's eyes were glassy, and he had numerous glow sticks in his front pocket, police said. The officer also detected the odor of alcohol, and noticed a white powder on his lap, according to police reports. Oliva told the officer that he was coming from a club party in Norwalk and was heading home to Stamford.
After Oliva gave police permission to search his car, officers found a soda can with plastic protruding from the top, police said. Inside the can were two plastic baggies, one containing a green residue and the other containing flecks of white powder, police said. Substance tests were performed, but they did not test positive for narcotics, according to police.
Oliva failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody, police said.
