John Dowling, 43, of Stamford was charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to obey a stop sign. He posted a $250 bond and will appear in court Aug. 21.
On Sunday, Aug. 11 around 1 a.m. an officer observed a 2013 Jeep Wrangler on Ledge Road. As the driver approached the entrance ramp to I-95 southbound, he drove through the stop sign and onto the highway at a high rate of speed, according to police reports.
The officer stopped Dowling on I-95 near the rest area. The officer detected the odor of alcohol on Dowling's breath, and reported that he appeared confused and his speech was slurred, according to police. Dowling told the officer he was coming from a picnic.
When asked about driving through the stop sign, police said that Dowling told the officer, "I'm from Darien. I've been running that stop sign for 20 years. It's a stupid stop sign that shouldn't even be there."
Police said that Dowling was uncooperative with officers, and initially refused to perform a field sobriety test. According to police reports, he eventually told the officers, "Just arrest me." He was then taken into custody.
