New Canaan Police had arrested two Norwalk residents last week after a lengthy investigation. Wayne E. Barker, 24, was charged with two counts of forgery and misapplication of property. Kimberly Ann Ruff, 36, was charged with four counts of identity theft, and one count of second-degree forgery and second-degree larceny.

The investigation stems from a complaint made to New Canaan Police on Dec. 12, 2015 of stolen checks from a mailbox. Police said that over the next few months, multiple victims of the same crime were discovered. A year-long joint investigation between the Patrol and Investigative Sections revealed at least nine victims from New Canaan, with a total value of checks cashed in excess of $31,000, police said. It was determined that three suspects were involved in the spree, police said.

Police said the suspects stole the checks from the mailboxes and altered the payee information, and then deposited the checks into multiple bank accounts using a mobile device. Through their investigation New Canaan Police were able to obtain arrest warrants for the three suspects.

Wayne R. Barker turned himself in to police on Wednesday and was charged.
