The woman told police that she believes the theft occurred when she was at the Panera on Post Road on Saturday, Nov. 8. She was there from 12:45 to 3 p.m. and used her wallet to pay for food, and put it back into her purse but did not close the purse, police said.

She later received a text from Chase Bank at 4 p.m. that her credit card had been used to purchase $637.04 worth of merchandise from the Target in Stamford. She then checked her purse and discovered that the wallet was missing.

The wallet contained numerous credit cards and debit cards, as well as $80 in cash, her driver's license, Social Security card and her Medicaid card, police said.

That day her cards were used to make numerous purchases in Darien, Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich. These purchases included:

  • $955.02 at the Walmart in Norwalk,
  • $319 at the Staples in Greenwich,
  • $54.41 at the Starbucks in Stamford,
  • purchases for $31.50 and $16.43 at the Exxon Mobil in Darien, and
  • $1,900 at the Stamford Town Center.

The total amount taken from the woman was $3,572.06, according to police.

Police are investigating the incident, including reviewing security footage from the stores where the cards were used.
