NORWALK, Conn. -- An early morning accident involving two tractor-trailers and a spill of rolls of paper onto the highway jammed traffic on Interstate 95 northbound in Norwalk for the Tuesday morning commute, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Norwalk Fire Department.

The right and center lanes of northbound I-95 were closed from 5 a.m., when the accident occurred, until after the morning rush ended, DOT said.

The Norwalk Fire Department responded at 5 a.m. to an accident in which a tractor-trailer truck struck another tractor-trailer that was parked on the shoulder just beyond the entrance ramp for Exit 16 northbound, Deputy Fire Chief Edward Prescott said.

The tractor-trailer that struck the parked trailer was carrying 20 bundles of rolled paper weighing 2,400 pounds each, Prescott said. It split open from the collision, causing the trailer to buckle under the weight of cargo and come to rest under the Strawberry Hill Avenue bridge, he said.

Several rolls of paper, weighing up to 600 pounds each, that fell out of the trailer were moved by firefighters and State Police troopers to free up a lane to get traffic moving, Prescott said.

The highway was reduced to one or two lanes as Nat’s Towing worked to remove the trucks from the highway, he said.

The driver of the truck that was parked suffered minor injuries and was transported to Norwalk Hospital, Prescott said.
