Two Charged With Stealing Gift Cards From Darien CVS

DARIEN, Conn. – Two New York men were arrested in Darien last week after one was accused of stealing pre-paid gift cards from a CVS store, police said.

An employee at the store called police at about 3 p.m. Friday to report the incident. The caller said that a man had come into the store, walked through the aisles, and left without purchasing anything. The man then returned to the store and again tried to leave without paying for any items, but was seen with pre-paid gift cards in his hands, according to the police report.

Officers arrived and found Julius Smith Jr., 21, and Kwasi Opoku Jr., 27, both of the Bronx, N.Y., in a nearby parking lot. Smith admitted to trying to take cards, but told police he had thrown them to the ground before leaving the store, according to the police report. But officers also found 17 pre-paid cards in the pair’s car, police said.

Police believe that Smith had taken the recovered cards during his first trip into the store, and had left other cards in the store during a second attempt. Both he and Opoku were placed under arrest.

Smith and Opoku were each charged with two counts of sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy. They were released after posting $150 bond, and are due in court on Oct. 28.
