The incident began at 4:30 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to a 911 hangup call from the Exxon gas station at 1510 Post Road E., police said.

When Westport Officer David Perez arrived, he immediately took Allens Verdier, 25, of Stratford, into custody, police said.

Verdier had entered the store and demanded to buy a single cigarette, police said. When the clerk said that they do not sell single cigarettes, Verdier went behind the counter and began assaulting the clerk, police said.

Verdier then assaulted an elderly male in the store who was attempting to call 911, police said.

Verdier appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, police said. A brown leafy substance found in his possession tested positive for PCP, police said.

He was taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation, police said.

He will be charged with possession of a hallucinogen, third-degree assault, third-degree assault on an elderly person, two counts of interfering with a 911 call and second-degree breach of peace, police said.

Bond was set at $15,000 for a court date of March 29.
