Westport Cops: New Jersey Man Nabbed For Stealing Airbags At Train Station

WESTPORT, Conn. — A New Jersey man faces multiple charges for breaking into cars and stealing airbags at the Saugatuck train station this spring, police said.

On June 9 at 6 p.m., Jose Cruz, 50, of Clinton Place, Newark, drove up to a parked Honda CRV, pried open the door and stole the airbag from the steering wheel, police said. He also removed airbags from two other Honda CRVs around 7:30 p.m. on May 7, police said.

Detectives used surveillance footage to identify Cruz, who was previously arrested by Darien police for a similar offense, police said.

Cruz was arrested in New Jersey and extradited to Connecticut. He was charged with three counts of third-degree burglary from a motor vehicle, three counts of tampering with a motor vehicle, three counts of fourth-degree larceny, two counts of conspiracy to commit tampering with a motor vehicle, two counts of conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny and two counts of conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, police said.

He was held on $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 29.
