DARIEN, Conn. -- Someone trying to steal a car from a Darien home this past weekend accidentally drove the car into the home's garage door, according to police.

The attempted theft coincided with several motor vehicle burglaries that occurred in the area during the same time period.

A resident of Hollow Tree Ridge Road awoke to a loud banging sound at around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20. When the homeowner looked outside, the saw their 2016 Honda Pilot apparently driven into the garage door. They also noticed the driver's side door was ajar.

The resident called police and officers responded to the area, bringing a K-9 along in an attempt to locate a suspect. They were unable to find the suspect, but an investigation revealed that the suspects had attempted to steal the car, but had driven forward instead of in reverse. The keys had been left in the vehicle, but were now missing, police said.

During a canvass of the neighborhood, police discovered two other cars on Hollow Tree Ridge Road had been entered. In both cases, the cars had been left unlocked, but the owners checked and nothing appeared to be missing, police said.

Two residents of nearby Wilson Ridge Road also reported that their cars had been entered. In one case, a homeowner noticed that the interior light of his 2016 Mazda CX-5 was on, and he checked it to discover that the glove box was open and two debit cards were missing. Nothing unusual had been observed by the homeowner, police said. The car had been left unlocked.

In the other Wilson Ridge Road case, officers conducting a canvass discovered that two cars in one driveway had been entered overnight. A debit card, a credit card and a driver's license were all missing. Again, the cars had been left unlocked.
