DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien Democratic Town Committee endorsed a slate of candidates this week to run in this fall’s election, but for a couple of offices the party nominated temporary “placeholders” until suitable candidates are found.

For first selectman, the party nominated Democratic Town Committee Chairman Randy Klein to serve as a temporary placeholder and, for town clerk, Democrats chose Rob Richards. The placeholders will have until 24 days before the Nov. 5 election to remove their names from contention, and, once they do, the new candidates will have three days to add their names.

“By naming placeholders, it allows us to extend the deadline to find someone to run for these offices,” Klein said. The decision was made during Tuesday night's nominating caucus. “We have a couple of people who have expressed a sort of ‘ninth inning’ interest in running, but for personal reasons they are not coming forward yet.”

Whoever decides to run for those spots will face formidable Republican incumbents Jayme Stevenson for first selectman and Donna Rajczewski for town clerk.

Klein said he is confident in the party naming candidates for the two offices in the coming weeks.

The party’s remaining candidates for the fall election are:

Board Of Selectmen: Kip Hall and Reilly Tierney

Board Of Education: Shannon Silsby and Callie Sullivan

Board of FinanceL Frank Huck

Planning and Zoning: Eric Voight

Town Treasurer: Tom Valentino

Board of Assessment Appeals: Sharad Samy
