Darien May Raise Price Of Train Station Parking

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien is considering an increase in the cost of parking at its train stations to $4 for daily users and by $100 for an annual permit.

First Selectman Jayme Stevenson had proposed increasing the daily voucher parking from $3 to $5 a day to the Board of Selectman. But members thought that this was too high and proposed an increase to $4.

“In terms of daily parking, I just want to be competitive with our peer towns, especially in light of what’s going on in Stamford and what parking mayhem may ensue in the coming year or two,” Stevenson said. She was referring to the possible decision to move the Stamford train station’s parking garage a quarter-mile away from the platform.

Darien has one of the lowest daily parking costs in the area, and many commuters from neighboring towns park at Darien stations.

If approved, the price increase in daily parking would be instituted next year, with another potential $1 increase the following year. The price of an annual parking permit could be increased $100 from $345 to $445. This increase would be phased in over two years.

Darien is also considering technological improvements to better manage parking at the train stations. These include eliminating the scratch-off paper vouchers and replacing them with a pay station, introducing a mobile app for paying for parking, online permit processing and a license plate reader.

The Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing on the proposed increases at its meeting Monday, Oct. 29, at 7:45 p.m. at Town Hall.
