DARIEN, Conn. The dining room of the Goose in Darien regularly erupted in cheers for Republican Mitt Romneys responses during Wednesday nights debate. The members of the Darien Republican Town Committee came out in droves to show their support for their candidate in his debate against President Barack Obama.
I think it was very clear, said Tammy Whittier, who was one of several people who picked Romney as the winner of the first debate. I think his delivery was crisp, he responded with exactness and didnt evade questions but was very direct.
Some compared the debate to the famous 1960 debates between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, with Romney looking better than his opponent.
I think Obama looked tired, unprepared and uncomfortable, while Romney looked ready, prepared and healthy. He looked like a leader, said Morgan Whittier.
Another viewer Dot Kelly said, I thought it was an outstanding debate, and a great example of our democratic process. I was impressed with both candidates.
Viewers in the dining room of the Goose sat enthralled by the debate that played on several screens. Romneys answers were often punctuated with loud rounds of applause. In other parts of the restaurant, it was a little hard to hear the program over the conversations that the debate sparked among those watching.
The fact that the RTC made this happen is wonderful. The camaraderie that this engendered and the conversation that we shared was more valuable than the debate, said Terry Gaffney. I think we were the winners.
