DARIEN, Conn. – A total of 28 Darien Republicans who have volunteered for the party and served on various boards and commissions were honored recently by the party for their service to the community.
The group was celebrated at the Republican Town Committee’s first “Thank You Barbecue” held at the Weed Beach Paddle Hut, and officials hope to make the event an annual occurrence.
“It takes hundreds of dedicated volunteers, regardless of political affiliation, to support the smooth functioning of our local government,” said First Selectman Jayme Stevenson, who attended the event with fellow selectmen Dave Campbell and Jerry Nielsen, in a statement. “Dave, Jerry and I are so pleased to begin a new tradition of appropriately thanking our fellow Republicans and the RTC for all the good they do for the town of Darien.”
Darien RTC Chairman Jim Palen echoed those sentiments. "We are honored to have such a broad base of Republican volunteers who work tirelessly on Darien’s boards and commissions. We owe them our appreciation and gratitude."
Together, the 28 honorees have more than 300 years worth of experience helping the town, the party and various organizations, according to officials.
Honored were Karen Armour, Harry Artinian, Bob Baker, Amy Bell, Bob Bewkes, Karen Brennan, Vin Burke, Fred Conze, Charlie Goodyear, Susan Graham, Norm Guimond, Peter Hillman, Reese Hutchison, Joi Reiner Gallo, Pete Kenyon, Bob Locke, Jon Olmsted, Jack Rearden, Linda Santarella, Janet Sargent, Jenny Schwartz, Don Smith, Murry Stegelmann, Al Tibbetts, Mike Tone, Mike Wallace, Kim Westcott and Christine Wood.
Hillman, speaking on behalf of the honorees thanked the officials for holding the event. “I remember at the end of 1 a.m. meetings, wondering why are we doing this? We agreed it’s because of the collegiality of it all, we enjoyed giving back, we enjoyed working with all our colleagues, from both sides of the aisle, to make the town a better place.”
