FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — All 54 female legislators in the state’s General Assembly have sponsored proposed legislation that would crack down on human trafficking.
The bill, HB 5666: An Act Concerning the Forfeiture of Moneys and Property Derived from Human or Sex Trafficking, would impose stricter penalties on people who engage in human trafficking, either for sex or labor. It would also authorize the forfeiture of money and property used in or obtained through crimes involving human and sex trafficking.
"I’m pleased to support this bipartisan legislation, which will put strong penalties in place for those who commit terrible crimes against innocent victims, many of whom are women and children,” Republican state Rep. Gail Lavielle, who represents Wilton, Westport and Norwalk, said in a statement.
“It will help bring to justice people who engage in nothing less than a form of slavery. I also hope that our support of this bill will also help to raise awareness of human trafficking, which occurs in more communities than many people realize.”
