How Does Darien Fare In The State Budget Plan?

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The Democrats latest state budget proposal now up for a vote in the state legislature takes aim at state aid to towns and public school districts in an effort to close a nearly $1 billion shortfall.

The proposal would include deep reductions in the Education Cost-Sharing grants from the state to public school districts and would eliminate $24.6 million sent to some towns for school transportation and crossing guards. 

Below is the total education aid proposed for fiscal 2017 based upon a report by the Connecticut Mirror, which includes the amount of the proposed cut and the percent increase or decrease, for each town in Fairfield County:

  • Bethel: $8,219,477 in education aid, a cut of $170,316 or 2 percent less
  • Bridgeport: $183,470,069 in education aid, a cut of $2,460,307, or 1.3 percent less
  • Brookfield: $1,547,178 in education aid, an increase of $30,169, or 1.9 percent
  • Danbury: $31,794,969 in education aid, an increase in education funding of $163,829, or 0.5 percent more.
  • Darien: $775,610 in education aid, a cut of $596,872, or 43.5 percent less
  • Easton: $245,388 in education aid, a cut of $348,186, or 58.7 percent less
  • Fairfield: $1,663,896 in education aid, a cut of $1,932,735, or 53.7 percent less
  • Greenwich, $1,444,752 in education aid, a cut of $1,593,024 or 52.4 percent less 
  • Monroe: $6,542,117 in education aid, a cut of $35,302, or 0.5 percent less
  • New Canaan: $678,870 in education aid, a cut of $530,473 or 43.9 percent less
  • New Fairfield: $4,438,020 in education aid, a cut of $45,123, or 1 percent less
  • Newtown: $5,084,537 in education aid, an increase of $222,339 or 4.6 percent less 
  • Norwalk: $11,561,322 in education aid, a cut of $132,598 or 1.1 percent less
  • Redding: $264,345 in education aid, a cut of $423,225, or 61.6 percent less
  • Ridgefield: $806,259 in education aid, a cut of $1,186,746 or 59.6 percent less
  • Shelton: $6,204,573 in education aid, an increase of $585,691 or 10.4 percent more
  • Sherman: $81,197 in education aid, a cut of $134,892, or 62.4 percent less
  • Stamford: $11,353,402 in education aid, an increase of $2,805 or 0 percent.
  • Stratford: $21,822,698 in education aid, a cut of $489,201 or 2.2 percent less
  • Trumbull: $3,700,734 in education aid, an increase of $257,788, or 7.5 percent more
  • Westport: $911,087 in education aid, a cut of $1,072,322, or 54.1 percent less
  • Weston: $381,897 in education aid, a cut of $463,964, or 54.9 percent less
  • Wilton: $666,263 in education aid, a cut of $795,708, or 54.4 percent less

The Connecticut Mirror also examined how each town and city would fare in Fiscal 2017 when proposed aid to both schools and municipalities is added together. 

Bridgeport would be among the cities getting most in new funding from the state, while Greenwich and Fairfield would be among those losing the most, CT Mirror said.

Below is the total amount in state aid the cities and towns in Fairfield County would lose or gain from 2016 to 2017, according to The Connecticut Mirror report:

  • Bethel: $219,307 gain
  • Bridgeport: $6,984,521 gain
  • Brookfield: $374,353 gain
  • Danbury: $2,630,220 gain
  • Darien: $422,711 loss
  • Easton: $193,359 loss
  • Fairfield: $1,177,321 loss
  • Greenwich: $1,232,048 loss
  • Monroe: $368,061 gain
  • New Canaan: $355,006 loss
  • New Fairfield: $240,471 gain
  • New Milford: $225,240 gain
  • Newtown: $753,610 gain
  • Norwalk: $1,977,978 gain
  • Redding: $232,183 loss
  • Ridgefield, $672,808 loss
  • Shelton: $1,292,335 gain
  • Sherman: $96,699 loss
  • Stamford: $2,870,522 gain
  • Stratford: $629,304 gain 
  • Trumbull, $1,002,880 gain
  • Weston: $252,863 loss
  • Westport: $785,455 loss
  • Wilton: $416,000 loss
