FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- With Deirdre Daly set to stay in her position as U.S. attorney for the district of Connecticut until October, President Donald Trump has some time before he has to select a replacement for her.

Daly had been one of 46 U.S. attorneys who had been instructed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to submit their resignations earlier this month. The decision was later reversed in Daly's case , as she will be allowed to stay until October in order to complete 20 years with the Justice Department.

According to the Connecticut Post, there are several potential Republican contenders for the position. Former state Rep. John Shaban of Redding has been angling for the job, the Connecticut Post reported, despite once calling Trump a "jerk," the Connecticut Post reported. Shaban told the Connecticut Post that he does not belief that disqualifies him, as Trump has stated his desire to unite the party.

Other potential candidates for the U.S. attorney job identified by the Connecticut Post include:

  • Ben Proto, a Stratford lawyer and Trump's former state campaign director
  • John Pavia of Easton, a former New York City assistant district attorney
  • Susan Hatfield of Pomfret, a state prosecutor
  • Ross Garber, a chief counsel to former Govs. John Rowland and Jodi Rell
  • Martha Dean, a former candidate for state attorney general

The Connecticut Post reported that it took both former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama a year to make their selections for the U.S. attorney position. State GOP Chair J.R. Romano told the Connecticut Post that the Trump family could play a role in selecting a candidate, since they have close ties to Connecticut.
