The home at 37 Beacon Street in Bridgeport is listed for $1,625,000. James Millington of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty in Southport is the listing agent for the property, which was formerly owned by U.S. Congressman Christopher Shays, a publisher of the Bridgeport Post newspaper, a bank chairman and CEO of Peoples Bank and most recently by David Walker, a former U.S. Comptroller General and a candidate for Lieutenant Governor last year.

Along with living under the same roof as some business and political heavyweights, the next owner of the 5-bedroom gem will also enjoy waterfront views from nearly every room in the house. More amazingly, the home is not included in a FEMA flood zone because of its elevation and positioning in the harbor. Since Superstorm Sandy in 2012, insurance costs have skyrocketed for similar homes that are located in flood zones.

“You don’t have to pay the insurance coverage that you would need in most waterfront locations,’’ Millington said. “That’s a huge benefit."

The home also includes four baths, 4,494 square feet of living space and a rooftop balcony that overlooks the nearby harbor and Long Island Sound. It was originally built in 1937.

“The layout is ideal for people who want an on the water experience,’’ Millington said. “There are amazing water views from almost every room”

Millington said the kitchen has been updated with top of the line appliances. The master bedroom suite has also been remodeled with a dressing room, his and hers walk-in closets and bathroom. A wall of French doors open to a balcony off of the master bedroom.

The third floor of the home features a large recreation room and the fourth floor includes a rooftop deck.

“The house has been carefully and tastefully expanded by all four owners,’’ Millington said. “The flow of the floor plan is ideal for entertaining. A lot of thought went into the renovations over the years. There are amazing views from everywhere in the house.”

The home is located in Bridgeport’s Black Rock section, one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods. It is nestled between Fayerweather and Black Rock Yacht Clubs. “There are a great deal of restaurants within walking distance,’’ Millington said. “It’s a community within a community. It has its own sense of pride.”

Millington said similar waterfront homes in other sections of the county would be far more costly. He said the combination of location, renovations and price make the home one of the most desirable upscale properties in Fairfield County.

“It’s a wonderful neighborhood with a lot of diversity,’’ Millington said. “What you get for the price is amazing.”
