First Selectman Gives Town Update At Darien Board Of Realtors Spring Fling

DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson gave a "State of the Town Update" at a recent Board of Realtors Spring Fling and general meeting.

The Darien Board of Realtors held the event on May 7 at the Country Club of Darien. Stevenson provided information on town-wide projects, education; and improvements to the Town.

In her remarks, Stevenson said:

  • The town is in better than Triple A shape
  • The schools are experiencing growing enrollment
  • The town and schools are moving through the Special Education crisis
  • A new superintendent of schools will be coming July 31
  • Families continue to want to come to Darien to raise families
  • The town has purchased two parcels of land (4 Short Lane to enhance Weed Beach property and 32 Hoyt St. near Holmes School). They continue to look for other land acquisitions that make sense to the town.
  • A sale of the property at the corner of West and Leroy recently fell through
  • The proposed Saddle Ridge Road cell tower has been set aside and won't be moving forward at this time
  • Projects on the horizon include a renovation of the Noroton Heights train station
  • The town recently implemented commuter parking changes a positive change for downtown shops and shoppers
  • Dredging and reconstruction of Gorham pond is expected this year
  • The town is reviewing a redraft of the conservation plan and development to secure a more walkable downtown with better pedestrian infrastructure
  • Stevenson recommended that the group should take note and become acquainted with the groundwork for county government and regional taxation under discussion
  • Discussions are under way for a widening of Interstate 95 that include the stretch going through Darien.
