NPD Hosts Camp for Kids

Norwalk police officers will pull double duty as camp counselors this summer when the NPD sponsors the Annual Summer Camp Academy. A joint project between the D.A.R.E. program and the Norwalk Police Activities League, the camp is open to students leaving fifth grade and expecting to enter middle school in September.

Designed to be both educational and entertaining, campers will take a morning tour of Norwalk’s Harbor and islands aboard the Norwalk Police Department Marine Division’s vessels. They will learn about the State's Court System and tour the Norwalk Police Department headquarters. They will also be treated to a special demonstration by the highly trained police dogs. During past sessions, campers have visited the Bronx Zoo and Lake Compounce in Bristol. This will be the 13th year for the two-week program that is organized by Officer Carleton Giles.

"The camp is a terrific extension of the work our officers do in the elementary schools through the D.A.R.E. program," said Chief Harry Rilling. "It is a wonderful opportunity for our officers and young citizens to interact in a healthy, positive way.”

Campers will meet at the NPD headquarters each morning at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served. On those evenings when activities run late, campers will also enjoy dinner. The cost is $150 for the two-week session and some scholarship money is available. Applications can be picked up at Headquarters, One Monroe St., Norwalk.
