Eastchester-Tuckahoe Chamber Honors Students

Local businesses gave back to the community last night granting scholarships to two high school students

The Eastchester-Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce honored Dana Cirillo, a senior at Tuckahoe High School, and Sarah Orlando, a senior at Eastchester High School, at its annual dinner held at the Embassy Diner in Eastchester.

Cirillo, who will attend Pace University in the fall, said she was thrilled by the $500 award.

Cirillo said that she would recommend that students get involved in as many activities as possible. "But don't get involved just to get involved," she said. "Find your passion."

The award from the Chamber of Commerce was one of two awards Cirillo won last night. After her meeting with the Chamber, Cirillo raced to the Tuckahoe Board of Education meeting to join her varsity softball teammates. The team were Section One Class C finalists and Cirillo made all league.

Sarah Orlando had a slightly less eventful evening, but she was very busy last summer when she held nine arts and crafts classes for 20 members of the Eastchester Senior Citizens group. Held at Lake Isle, the classes helped seniors maintain and strenghthen fine motor skills. The classes were part of Orlando's final project as a 12-year member of the Girl Scouts of America.

"I have always loved being a part of the Girl Scouts. It is a great way to serve the community and help others," Orlando said.

Orlando, who will go to Harvard next year, said she was honored that the Chamber chose her to receive the award. "I was so excited when I found out," she said.

Co-President Sandy Albanese said there were approximately 15 applicants for the award, which the Chamber has been giving out for at least 25 years.

"Our mission is to support, encourage and nurture businesses in our community," she said. "This is our way of doing something for the benefit of students in our community."

The Chamber meets once a month and said they encourage business to business relationships.

"We have found that these relationships help to create a thriving and vibrant business community that benefits us as business owners and our community," said Henry Ciamarra, of Eastchester Trip Center. He is a 30 year member of the Chamber of Commerce. "I recommend it.[because] it brings all of us together and that is a great thing."
