'Just One More Thing' for Ossining's Peter Falk

The actor Peter Falk may have been famous world round as Lieutenant Frank Columbo from the television mystery series, but in Ossining, where he was raised, he was remembered as a high school baseball and basketball player whose father owned Falk's clothing store on Main Street.

Falk was beloved as Columbo, a self-deprecating character in a rumpled raincoat, who had a disarming way of saving the best question for last -- "Just One More Thing" Lieutenant Columbo would say before asking his crime-solving question.

He was beloved in Ossining as well. He returned briefly in 2005 when the village honored him by renaming the street where he grew up as Peter Falk Place.

Noting Falk's famous glass eye, The New York Times wrote on Friday "Peter Michael Falk was born on Sept. 16, 1927, in New York City, and grew up in Ossining, N.Y, where his father owned a clothing store and where, in spite of his missing eye, he was a high school athlete. In one story he liked to tell, after being called out at third base during a baseball game, he removed his eye and handed it to the umpire.

'You’ll do better with this,' he said."
