Greenburgh Endures Near-Record Temps; More Coming

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Summer is off to a scorching start.

Thermometers climbed past 90 degrees and approached record-breaking highs in Greenburgh on Wednesday, the first official day of summer. As the temperature rose, many residents took to the town pool to find relief from the sticky weather.

“We’re just trying to find ways to stay out of the heat,” Karen Haeseker said as she headed into Anthony F. Veteran Park with her two sons.

Temperatures in Greenburgh reached 94 degrees, four short of the record set in 1952. It was much of the same across Westchester County, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a heat warning for the area.

Thursday is supposed to be even warmer, with temperatures expected to reach 99 degrees in Greenburgh, according to the NWS. Residents likely won’t get much relief from the sun until Monday, when temperatures are expected to drop back into the 70s.

Town officials encouraged residents looking to escape the heat to head to the air conditioned Town Hall, library or community center. Many residents, however, were taking the mini-heat wave in stride.

“It’s summer – it’s to be expected,” Jeff Schneider said, walking out of the Tarrytown Road Kmart with an air conditioner. “I’m sure we’ll have a few more days like this.”

Heading toward the Greenburgh town pool, Renee Swift said she was enjoying the warmer-than-average weather.

“I like summer so this is perfect for me,” she said.  “It’s perfect day for the pool.”
