With high temperatures expected to soar into the mid-60s on Friday, another new record could be set. On Christmas Eve, a record of 72 degrees was set in Central Park, smashing the previous record of 63 degrees, making for the warmest Christmas Eve on record in New York City.

There is a chance of rain late Friday.Conditions should dry out briefly for Saturday but rain could return by mid-day and continue into Sunday with high temperatures in the mid-50s to around 60 across the area.

It will get a lot colder on Monday, with partly sunny skies and a high near 40 degrees.

But a low pressure system approaching from the southwest could bring significant snow and sleet Monday night and overnight into Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

The snow, which could be heavy at times, is likely after 8 p.m. Monday, mixing with sleet after 3 a.m. as temperatures drop to about 25 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Snow and sleet will continue before 9 a.m. Tuesday, with rain, snow, and sleet between 9 a.m. and noon, then rain after noon with a high near 41 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

Any snow on the ground will be gone Wednesday, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 50 degrees.
