This Is Favorite Sandwich In CT, Food & Wine Says: What Do You Think?

In a celebration of lunch, Food & Wine magazine has come out with a list of the best sandwiches in every state.

And, in a move that supports the list’s acumen, they didn’t try to claim Mystic Pizza is a sandwich. (We all love Mystic, but there’s more to CT comfort food than that.)

Can you guess what the top sandwich in Connecticut is?

What makes a sandwich the “best” in each state, according to Food & Wine, is how iconic the food is. Visual appeal, trends, and availability were not considered. Also not allowed on the list: burgers, hotdogs, burritos, tacos, and barbecue. Sandwich legends only, the magazine said.

New England is known for several sandwiches - the chow mein, lobster roll, Fluffernutter, Italian grinder, and (at least according to New England Today) the baked bean sandwich.

Connecticut's best sandwich, according to Food & Wine, is the Connecticut-style lobster roll. (It's made with sweet butter instead of mayonnaise.)

The magazine will send you to Abbott's Lobster in the Rough over in Long Island Sound to get a delicious lobster roll, but locals know there are excellent lobster rolls to be had all over the state.

Among some of the best places to get a lobster roll in Connecticut are: J’s Crab Shack in Hartford, City Fish Market in Wethersfield, Max’s Oyster Bar in West Hartford, Max Fish in Glastonbury, Lobster Hut in Milford, Captain Lou’s Chowdah House in Bethel, Stowes Seafood in West Haven, Liv’s Shack in Old Saybrook, and Mickey’s Oceanic Grill in East Hartford.

In other nearby states, Food & Wine said the top sandwiches are:

Massachusetts - Clam roll - a grilled, buttery hotdog bun stuffed with tender, fried clams and served with tartar sauce and lemon.

Vermont - Jambon-beurre (which means “ham-butter”) is a fine ham on a crispy, toasted, buttered baguette.

New York - Thick-cut, hot pastrami on rye.
