Darien High Will Have New Weight Rooms This Year

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien student athletes will have a new fitness area for workouts when school starts at the end of August. Work is being done on the exercise rooms at Darien High School, which are used by nearly all the sports teams.

The current fitness center, which is used by sports teams and physical education classes, will be given new equipment. A storage space and health classroom will be combined to create a new team room, where coaches can take sports teams for specific training. Additional space will be available in the fitness center after equipment is moved to the team room.

Assistant Superintendent Matthew Byrnes said the infrastructure work on the team room is complete, and new mirrors, doors and rubberized flooring have been installed. The school has ordered new aerobic and weightlifting equipment, which is in the process of being delivered and moved in.

The Blue Wave Booster Club led the charge to create the new fitness area in the high school. Club members felt a lot of the exercise equipment was worn and could be replaced. Teams had complained about a lack of space in the fitness center.

The Booster Club started a fundraising campaign in January and was able to raise enough money to pay for the project. The total cost of the project is $154,570, which includes $50,025 for the aerobic equipment, $44,466 for Cybex weightlifting equipment, $15,767 for weightlifting equipment for the team room and $44,312 for delivery and installation.

Byrnes said limited funds are being held in reserve for identifying areas of need once the fitness centers open, and for ordering equipment that is in higher demand. The club also has supported the use of audio/video systems to support training, which may be paid for with reserve funds.
