DARIEN, Conn. - Darien's eighth-grade geography whiz Michael Borecki placed first in Middlesex Middle School's National Geographic Bee for the third year in a row.
Borecki has seen great success in the Geography Bee competitions over the years. This is his fifth straight year of placing first in his school's Geographic Bee, having won Hindley's competition as a fourth- and fifth-grader. For the past four years, he has placed in the Top 10 in the Connecticut State Geographic Bee.
In 2011 and 2012 , Borecki bested 100 other Connecticut students to become the state champion and move on to the national competition in Washington D.C. He will now take a 70-question geography test to determine whether he moves on to the state competition again.
Thousands of schools nationwide take part every year in the geography competition, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. The competition is open to students in grades 4 through 8 and is designed to generate interest and public awareness of geography.
