Darien's Younger Students Score High on Tests

DARIEN, Conn. – The State Department of Education released the results of the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) on Wednesday morning. The exams test students on grades 3-8 in math, reading and writing.

On the third grade exams, 95.6 percent of Darien pupils performed at or above proficiency in math, and 82.5 percent performed at or above goal. In reading, 95 percent scored at or above proficiency, and 81.7 percent were at or above goal. For writing, 94.2 percent were at or above proficiency, and 82.6 percent were at or above goal.

Fourth graders generally fared a little better. On the math exams, 97.8 percent were at or above proficiency, and 92.1 percent were at or above goal. Reading exams saw 93.2 percent perform at or above proficiency and 85.2 percent at or above goal. In writing, 95.9 percent were at or above proficiency, and 86.5 percent at or above goal.

In fifth grade, 97.6 percent were at or above proficiency on the math exam, and 93.1 percent at or above goal. In reading, 93.9 percent were at or above proficiency, and 86.3 percent were at or above goal. Writing tests showed 97.7 percent at or above proficiency and 87.2 percent at or above goal.

Sixth grade math scores showed 98.7 percent at or above proficiency and 94.1 percent at or above goal. In reading, 97 percent were at or above proficiency and 93.8 percent were at or above goal. On the writing tests, 98.7 performed at or above proficiency and 90.3 percent were at or above goal.

On the seventh grade tests, 98.7 percent were at or above proficiency in math, and 95.4 percent at or above goal. On the reading exams, 98.2 percent were at or above proficiency and 95.7 percent were at or above goal. In writing, 96.7 percent were at or above proficiency and 84.2 percent were at or above goal.

In eighth grade, 98.7 percent of students performed at or above proficiency on the math exams and 94.2 percent were at or above goal. In reading, 97.9 percent were at or above proficiency and 95.8 percent at or above goal. On the writing tests, 97.9 percent were at or above proficiency and 91.6 percent at or above goal.
