To the editor:

On behalf of the Youth Asset Team, and the student body of Darien High School I would like to both the DHS administration and the Community Fund of Darien for helping implement the first and very successful, no homework day at DHS.

Sitting in last period physics, thinking about how I would be crushed with work over the weekend, I was thrilled, amazed, and warmed to hear a voice crackle over the loud speaker announcing Darien’s first no homework weekend. My reaction, among many others’ was of joy.

The announcement caught us all off guard, and it prefaced the great news by saying, “as a directed result of last spring’s Community Conversation...” At that moment I knew the level of commitment and seriousness that the administration had taken our words last spring. No homework may seem monumental, or it may sound trivial, but as it is with all gifts, it was the thought that counted.

My fellow YAT members and I partook in a follow-up meeting late last spring to try to come up with practical next steps, and this idea was voiced. I wasn’t sure how much traction it would actually attain, but it is obvious now how closely our principal, Mrs. Dunn listened and cared, and for that I thank you. Furthermore, the Community Fund of Darien is also in need of thanks for enabling the Community Conversation to occur.  The no-homework weekend demonstrated the administration’s commitment to our well being, and I believe that all students were truly thankful to their ability to follow through. It was successful, it was appreciated, and to both the Community Fund and to our administration we all say thank you for your continuing commitment to us as students and as teenagers.  Ian Burgoyne YAT Co-President
