DARIEN, Conn. Nearly all the members of Darien High Schools Class of 2012 will be continuing their education in the fall. Of the 305 students graduating Thursday, 295 will be going to school, a rate of 96.7 percent.
We processed more transcripts this year than we ever have before, said guidance coordinator Paul Ribeiro. Of the 295 students, 280 will be going to four-year colleges, nine will be going to two-year colleges and six will be attending college prep schools.
Nine students will be attending Norwalk Community College in the fall, the most attended by Darien's Class of 2012. Many look at NCC as an opportunity to save money, to live at home for a couple of years before transferring or as an option for some students who otherwise may not have gone to college, Ribeiro said.
In second place is Gettysburg College, which will enroll eight students from Darien. The University of Connecticut, Cornell University, Elon University and Hobart and William Smith Colleges will each have seven Darien students attending next year.
The average number of applications submitted per student was 8.8. This does not take into account students who applied early decision, most of whom only apply to a single school, Ribeiro said. That takes the average number of schools applied to per student up to 10 or 11, he said.
I start to get a little nervous when I see students applying to that many schools, Ribeiro said. Some apply to even more, he said, as many as 15 or 20. He suggested that students keep the number to single digits, and research schools that they know will be a good fit for them.
Of the 2,680 applications submitted from Darien, 113 were early decision and 755 were early action. More students are submitting their applications earlier in the school year, Ribeiro said. Some believe they have a better chance at some schools if they get the applications in early, and others want to get the application process done earlier to enjoy the rest of their senior year.
