DARIEN, Conn. -- About 600 Darien High School students experienced first-hand the devastating effects of driving under the influence of alcohol by using a state-of-the-art simulator.
The national “Save-A-Life Tour” developed the only simulators in the nation that give participants a completely realistic, sober perspective on the effects of driving while intoxicated, Darien police said.
The "Save-A-Life Tour" also uses tragic video and personal stories about the deaths of loved ones through drunken driving accidents.
Darien police from School Resource Officer program, Traffic Division, and Youth Division were on hand to assist in the demonstration with the high school students.
Many students were given a chance to engage in "Distracted Driving" simulators as well.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 5,000 people were killed and 440,000 injured in motor vehicle accidents connected to distracted driving. That represents 16 percent of all fatal crashes and 20 percent of all accidents that caused injuries.
