Search Committee Picks New Superintendent For Darien Schools

DARIEN, Conn. -- The Darien Superintendent Search Committee has chosen Daniel Brenner, current chief of the schools in Roslyn, N.Y., as its choice to lead the Darien school system and will recommend his appointment to the Board of Education at a meeting Tuesday, Jan. 27.

A search committee will recommend Daniel Brenner to be the next superintendent for Darien Schools.

"Dr. Brenner has the professional qualifications and personal qualities to lead the district forward in a positive and constructive way," the committee said in a statement. "We anticipate that Dr. Brenner will be appointed on Jan. 27 for a three-year term starting July 1."

Brenner has been superintendent for the Roslyn Public Schools since 2009. An honors graduate of Tufts University, Brenner earned his master’s degree and doctorate from Hofstra University.

He visited the Darien Public Schools on Jan. 15, and the search committee went to Roslyn on Jan. 20. The Darien school board must approve the appointment.

In a letter to the Roslyn school community posted on its website, Brenner announced that he is leaving the Long Island school district.

"It is with mixed emotions that I write you today. I am sad to say that I will be retiring from the Roslyn Public Schools effective June 30. I know I will be leaving a school community that I admire and respect, and I will do so knowing we have accomplished more than I could have ever imagined," he said.

He also announced that he has become the only finalist in the Darien Public Schools superintendent search.

"As most of you know, I have spent the past 10 years in Roslyn traveling 120 miles per day from my home in Westchester County," he said. "The ride, where I often spend over 90 minutes in the car each way, has finally gotten the best of me. The commute to Darien will cut my ride in half while presenting me the exciting opportunity to work in a school district that honors education much like ours in Roslyn, something that is very important to me."

Previous Superintendent Stephen Falcone resigned in October 2013, with his departure effective immediately. Tim Canty served briefly as acting superintendent until Lynne B. Pierson took over as interim superintendent in November 2013.
