Denise DiFederico, a fifth-grade teacher at Hindley, hosted the school’s annual Race for Change event for the fourth consecutive year.

She and her students presented a check for $4,006.30 to Make-A-Wish officials last Friday.

With the donation, Hindley Elementary has collected $10,000 through Race for Change. The average cost of granting a wish for one child with a life-threatening medical condition is $10,000, according to Michael Dominick, community and media relations manager at Make-A-Wish Connecticut.

“Reaching the $10,000 milestone as a school is incredible,” Dominick said in a press release.

“For the students to know that their efforts have raised enough money for a child with a life-threatening medical condition – perhaps a child their own age – to experience the power of a wish, is very fulfilling and rewarding.”

DiFederico became more involved with fundraising for Make-A-Wish Connecticut after her own daughter, Gina, had a wish granted through the organization.

Gina was able to meet Bethany Hamilton of "Soul Surfer" fame.

“We are proud to be the recipient of their generosity year after year, and it’s been an honor to get to know Denise DiFederico and her students over the years,” Dominick said.
