Kendra Shutts, Katie DeHaas and Juliet Ruhe announced last week that they will continue their rowing careers for the Bears, one of the top Division I college rowing programs in the country.

“It is very unusual to have all three of them going to one school,’’ CBC coach Liz Trond said. “They didn’t do it together. They all had other choices. But they felt a connection with the coach (Dave O’Neill). It’s exciting for them.”

Shutts, DeHaas and Ruhe went to CBC as freshmen and rowed for the team’s Novice boat. Now, they are among the team linchpins. Shutts and DeHaas were on the CBC Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 this fall, both of which went undefeated. Ruhe was on the CBC Junior Varsity 8 that also had a strong fall.

Just as important, the girls played key roles when CBC was in a state of transition. As some of the club’s top athletes graduated and moved on, the three Darien girls helped keep the club among the nation’s elite.

“They came in the kept the program going when it could’ve slipped a little bit,’’ Trond said. “They’ve helped us remain a strong girls program.”

The three Darien girls are part of a 10-member senior class at CBC that will continue rowing in college. Fairfield’s Jessica Ferrante and Weston’s Haley Bower will continue at Boston College, and Isabel Fitter of Fairfield will attend the University of Southern California. The four other seniors on CBC have not finalized their college plans.
