John Conley and Megan Keane won the individual races for Darien High School's cross country team in a meet Tuesday at Wilton. The boys beat Wilton, St. Joseph and Norwalk. The girls raced past the Cadets but lost a narrow decision to the Warriors.
In the boys race, Darien defeated Wilton, 21-39; St. Joseph, 15-49; and Norwalk, 15-49. The girls topped St. Joseph, 15-50, and fell to Darien, 26-30.
Conley won the boys race in 17:10 on the 3.1-mile course. Michael Johnston (third overall), Charlie Baird (fourth), Matt Gentile (sixth) and Michael Coe (seventh) were Darien's other scorers. Darien's top five runners were all packed within 45 seconds.
"We wanted to go out and get a good race, and that's exactly what we did,'' said coach Tyson Kaczmarek, whose team has just one loss this season, against perennial power Danbury. Conley is Darien's top runner, but the tight pack bodes well for the Blue Wave in postseason competition. The team will get a good idea of where it stands at Saturday's Wickham Park Invitational. "We'll see where we stand and what we need to do,'' Kaczmarek said.
Keane pulled ahead in the final 100 yards of the girls race and won in 16:22. Amanda Dobler took fifth while Sarah Colon (seventh), Grace Loh (eighth) and Katie Farren (ninth) rounded out the Blue Wave scoring. Wilton runner Alosha Southern won the meet for the Warriors with a strong finish kick in the last half-mile to grab sixth.
"I'm happy with the effort of the girls,'' said coach Steve Norris, whose team suffered its first loss. "Megan ran well, especially at the end."
