The Darien YMCA Blue sixth-grade boys basketball team defeated Greenwich, 43-37, in a tight Fairfield County Basketball League game Sunday.
Darien (4-2) opened up a 17-point lead before Greenwich used its full-court press to slice into the deficit. Greenwich's pressure allowed it to get within two points with less than two minutes remaining.
Key defensive stops and rebounds by Charlie Wright and Charlie Sealy and excellent free throw shooting by Jackson Ryan and Carter Scott (a combined seven for eight) helped Darien hold on.
Casey Brown was a big part of Darien's early success. He pulled down nine rebounds, blocked three shots and scored eight points. Energetic Joe Hardison also played well with nifty passing while contributing seven points. Will Stevens scored six and had a momentum rallying shot block. Jack Farren and Cord Fox were the best competitors on the floor, shutting down Greenwich's top scorers and making the Darien schemes flow.
Darien rebounded after dropping its league opener Saturday to Mount Vernon, N.Y., 43-33.
