DARIEN, Conn. The Darien Blue seventh-grade boys basketball team fell just short of its third straight upset in the AA bracket of the Fairfield County Basketball League playoffs Saturday when it lost to Fairfield, 54-53, at Weston High School.
Darien, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, upset No. 2 seed Danbury and No. 3 seed Greenwich to reach the final. Casey Brown scored 18 points for Darien, which finishes the season 18-11. Charlie Sealy added 11, all of them coming in the second half.
That was a tremendous game, Darien coach Shawn Grant said. I cant be more proud of my players. They gave it everything they had and did everything I asked them to do.
Fairfield guard J.J. Conway delivered the biggest plays of the game in the final minute for the winners. Conways three-pointer with 57 seconds left stretched Fairfields lead to 53-49. Conways steal ended Dariens final possession, and he was quickly fouled with four seconds left. Darien did not have enough time to get a quality shot off of the rebound.
We had the pace where we wanted it, Grant said. We like to play up-tempo. But give Fairfield credit. Theyre a good team and theyre deserving champions.
