DARIEN, Conn. The Darien boys cross country team is celebrating its Class L championship at Wickham Park in Manchester last Saturday.
The Blue Wave finished with 46 points, easily besting runner-up Naugatuck, which finished with 86. It was only the second state cross country title in team history for Darien, which won the Class MM crown in 2009.
This was a tremendous win for our program. We have been first or second at the class meet each of the last five years. While that is a fantastic accomplishment, nothing beats winning states. That is what we strive for every year. It doesnt get better than this, Darien coach Tyson Kaczmarek said. We have been on the other side of first place at states before. Weve paid our dues plenty of times. The guys know what it feels like to not win. Its bitter. No one wanted to go home with anything but first. Im so proud of the boys.
"Winning Class L was one of our goals from the very beginning of the season. To be able to go out there and accomplish this is an incredible feeling. It hasn't sunk in yet that this is only the second state championship in team history, said Charlie Baird, a senior co-captain.
