DARIEN, Conn. – Darien High School’s boys cross country team took over the top spot in the state coaches cross country poll after winning the Manchester Invitational last weekend in New Hampshire.

Darien, which was second in last week’s poll, moved ahead of league rival Danbury with the win in Manchester. Darien earned eight first-place votes among the 16 coaches voting in the poll. Danbury is ranked No. 2, and Fairfield Prep, Ridgefield and New Milford round out the top five.

Darien moved to the top of the poll after scoring 78 points in the Manchester win. The race included some of the top teams from New England, and the Blue Wave packed its top five runners in the first 32 places.

Junior Alex Ostberg led the Blue Wave with a second place finish. He covered the 5K (3.1-mile) distance in 15:40, two seconds behind the winner, Colin Tierney, from Bishop Hendricken High School in Rhode Island. Armstrong Noonan (10th), Marshall Huffman (12th), Colten Appleby (25th) and Brian Davey (32nd) rounded out the scorers for Darien, which won by six points over Bishop Hendricken. Ben Olsen and Peter Kreuch also ran in the race for Darien.

"We didn't go in to the race to win it,'' Darien coach Tyson Kaczmarek said. "We just wanted to go in and run a good race. As far as being No. 1 in the state, we'd like to stay under the radar. That's what we've done for the last few years. We'd like to be No. 1 in the state in early November, not late September."

Darien travels to New Canaan on Tuesday for its next league meet. Fairfield Warde, Stamford and Trinity Catholic will race.

The Blue Wave will also try to win the Wickham Invitational for the third straight year early next month. The meet attracts most of the top teams in the state and is run on the same course on which the runners will race in the state championships.
