DARIEN, Conn. The Darien High School boys cross country team is poised for another run to glory this fall after one of the most successful seasons in the history of the school.
After three strong months of summer training, I feel confident that we will perform as well as last year, co-captain Brian Davey said.
Peter Kreuch, another co-captain, said the team knows it has tough competition but is preparing for it.
We will face many strong teams at both the (Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) and state levels," he said. "The competition will be tough but we are confident in our teams ability."
Davey and Kreuch will serve as captains along with Marshall Huffman, Sean Lee and Andrew Xiong.
Last year, the Blue Wave went undefeated in the regular season, won the Wickham Park Invitational and captured the Class L Championship. The team also competed in the New England Association High School Cross Country Championship meet against the region's best teams, where it finished ninth out of 30 teams.
Coach Tyson Kaczmarek, who has been the driving force behind building a strong distance running program for boys at Darien, likes what he sees in this years team.
We have a solid group of young athletes," he said. "I like how they are developing as a team.
The Blue Wave lost four experienced leaders in last years captains, Charlie Baird, Eli Converse, Michael Coe and Michael Johnston.
While we lost four outstanding seniors to graduation, our expectations for this year are very high, Lee said. A lot of the younger runners have improved dramatically over the past year, and I can't wait to see the results of their hard work.
The season opener takes place on Sept. 11 at Ridgefield High School. Other marquee meets for Darien include the Wilton Invitational on Sept. 15, the Wickham Park Invitational on Oct. 6 and the league Championships on Oct. 18.
