Darien Boys Cross Country Wins Wickham Race

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien’s boys cross country team won the championship race of the Wickham Park Invitational for the second straight year on Saturday in Manchester.

Darien finished with 102 points, followed by New Milford with 115 and Xavier with 116. Sophomore Alex Ostberg finished fourth on the 5-kilometer course in 16:48. Darien’s other scorers included Marshall Huffman, Colten Appleby, Ben Olsen and Brian Davey. Peter Kreuch and Jack Sparkman were also on Darien’s varsity lineup.

“We thought we had a shot to win the meet today and things went our way,’’ coach Tyson Kaczmarek said. “We still have yet to put a complete ‘team’ race together. We keep having five guys have good races, but I know there is more to our team performance that we have yet to see.”

Huffman finished 19th overall in 17:38, and Appleby was 22nd overall in 17:42. Olsen was 25th in 17:44 and Davey was 38th in 18:01. Complete results are available online .

The meet featured some of the top teams from around the state and is run on the same course as the state championships later this month.

Darien finished fourth in the freshman race as Jack Murray (ninth) and Jack Solini (10th) finished in the top 10.

The Blue Wave is ranked fourth in the latest state coaches poll, but on Saturday outran No. 2 Xavier and No. 3 Amity. Darien has an important dual meet on Tuesday against top-ranked Danbury on the Hatters’ home course.

“While it was nice to win the meet today, we want to win states,’’ Kaczmarek said. “This meet has no bearing on states. That has been the goal all year and continues to be.”
