DARIEN, Conn. – A cherished jersey from the Darien Challenger League was stolen from the Goose, and the owners just want it to be safely returned.
“It has such sentimental value,” said Lynn Gagliardi, a part owner of the Goose. She and her husband Mike helped start the Darien Challenger League 13 years ago for kids with special needs. The shirt was from the first year that the league had jerseys, and was signed by all the players.
The jersey was framed and hung up in the men’s room at the Goose. Gagliardi said that last Saturday somebody went in, took it, and put the empty frame back up on the wall.
“It’s senseless and unfortunate,” Gagliardi said. She said her guess is that somebody, possibly a kid, took it on a dare. She said she couldn’t think of anyone else who would have reason to take it. “I don’t think they had any idea what they were stealing.”
Gagliardi said that they just want to get the jersey back, no repercussions and no questions asked. It cannot be replaced, because some of the players who signed it have since passed away. The Goose is also offering a $50 reward for the safe return of the jersey.
