DARIEN, Conn. - Almost four years to the day since its last loss, the Darien High School field hockey team was defeated by Staples High School of Westport on Thursday evening in the conference semifinals, 1-0.
Staples' Misha Strage netted the game's only goal with 24:14 to play in the second half off a penalty corner. The Wreckers survived Darien's attempted comeback, with Staples keeper Chris Lueb coming up with 11 saves.
The loss snaps a 93-game unbeaten streak for Darien. It was the third longest streak in United States high school field hockey history, according to the National Federation of High Schools Record Book. It had been 82 games since the Blue Wave had even settled for a tie.
Staples will play Wilton for the conference championship on Saturday at Brien McMahon High School at 4 p.m.
