DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien White fifth grade boys basketball team got off to a strong start this season in the Fairfield County Basketball League with five straight wins. The young ballplayers found tougher challenges last weekend.
Darien lost to Greenwich on Friday, 45-34, and Norwalk on Saturday, 31-22. Darien closed out the busy weekend with a 28-20 win over New Canaan Red.
“They’re very hard to score against,’’ Darien coach Ira Cobb said after the loss to Norwalk. “I think my boys did well. They hung in there.”
Ryan Mulliken and John Slonieski scored six apiece for Darien in the loss to Norwalk. Jackson Leone, Will Harmon, Charlie Hunter, Ben Olson and Daniel Howe also contributed points.
Norwalk led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Darien was within two, 12-10, before the visitors extended the lead to 18-10 at halftime. Darien trimmed the lead to 18-14 midway through the third quarter before Norwalk pulled away again.
“What hurt us today was rebounding and missed shots,’’ Cobb said. “We had some easy shots that just didn’t fall.”
Darien returns to action Saturday at Middlesex Middle School against Bethel.
