Darien Football Careful Not To Look Ahead

DARIEN, Conn. – The assignment for Darien’s football team the next two weeks is to take care of business against Trumbull and Wilton.

The Blue Wave host Staples in a highly anticipated match up Oct. 27, but coach Rob Trifone’s team can’t look that far ahead.

“We need to take it one week at a time,’’ Trifone said after last week’s 41-6 rout of Danbury. “We’re on the road for the next two weeks, and that’s never easy. We can’t look past any of those games.”

The Blue Wave (3-1) meet Trumbull (1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday, and then visit Wilton (2-2) next Friday. Darien will be favored in both games. Three of the final four games will be tough, however, with Staples, Trinity Catholic and New Canaan waiting for the Blue Wave in the final month.

“Football’s a tough sport,’’ Trifone said. “With one loss, your back is against the wall. With two losses, you’re almost out. It’s a shame that way. The kids feel the same urgency. They know they have to get after it. Our goal is to get better every week and see what happens.”

Through the first weeks, Darien has shown it can put up points. The Blue Wave lead the conference in points scored with 154. Quarterback Henry Baldwin (870 yards passing), running back Christian Bognar (415 yards rushing) and receiver Nick Lombardo (380 receiving yards) lead the conference in offensive statistics.

Darien did show it has some work to do defensively in its 35-28 overtime loss Sept. 29 to St. Joseph, in which St. Joseph quarterback Jordan Vazzano threw for 188 yards.

“I don’t think our team walked away with any confidence lost from that game,’’ Trifone said. “They’re angry because we had our opportunities to win that game. They wanted to come back harder.”

Darien is ranked eighth in the latest Class L football ratings. Yet, there is little margin for error going forward, and one more loss likely will cost them a chance to make the state tournament.

“We can’t look ahead,’’ Trifone said. “Every game is important from here on out.”
