DARIEN, Conn. – Darien High’s girls basketball team scored the first 13 points of the game Friday night and went on to defeat Staples, 45-30, in Westport.
The victory was the sixth straight for the surging Blue Wave, who improved to 10-4 overall and 9-3 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. Staples fell to 5-9 overall and 5-7 in the league.
Meg Marren scored 20 to lead Darien, while Emily Stein added eight.
In the first quarter, Marren had seven points and Kate Bushell scored all six of her points to spark Darien’s fast start. Bushell's three-pointer at the close of the quarter gave the Blue Wave a 16-2 lead. Darien also played terrific defense, holding Staples scoreless until just 33 seconds remained in the quarter.
Staples tried to come back in the fourth quarter and got within 39-30 on a three-pointer by Nikki Bukovsky with 3:43 to play. A basket by Kelly Karczewski halted Staples’ comeback, and the Blue Wave scored the final six points of the game.
The victory ties Darien with Ridgefield for sixth place in the conference race for one of eight playoff berths. Darien and Ridgefield lead Fairfield Ludlowe and Trinity Catholic of Stamford by one game. Darien visits undefeated Danbury on Tuesday.
