DARIEN, Conn. The Darien High girls ice hockey team knew it would have to keep the state's leading scorer, Olivia Hompe, in check if it wanted to stick close to archrival New Canaan. The Blue Wave managed to do just that Friday, but New Canaan flexed its depth to hand Darien just its second conference loss of the season, 7-2.
Hompe, who set a state record earlier this season with seven goals in one game, was held to just two by Darien. But Holly Burwick stepped up for the Rams, netting a hat trick against the Blue Wave.
New Canaan jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Sara Shaker put Darien on the board with less than two minutes to play. Before the first period horn sounded, however, New Canaan dealt a crushing fourth goal.
Julia Arrix scored less than 30 seconds into the second period to cut New Canaan's lead to 4-2, but that would be as close as the Blue Wave would get. The Rams scored twice in a ten-second span to extend its lead to 6-2 late in the third. Burwick completed her hat trick in the third period.
Darien (8-4, 6-2 conference) will try to bounce back Monday when it takes on Staples at 8:30 p.m.
