DARIEN, Conn. Dariens girls swimming team won its second state championship in three years Wednesday night. The Blue Wave compiled 839 points to outdistance New Canaan, 689 points, for the Class L title in a meet at Wesleyan University.
Amanda Bieler won the 200 freestyle, and Caroline Orem won the 100 backstroke for Dariens only individual wins. Darien picked up points in every event, and finished second in two relays and third in another.
In the opening 200 yard medley relay, Darien took second with Orem, Cammie Kirby, Caroline Kearney and Olivia Leunis. The 200 freestyle relay team placed third with Emily Nixon, Leunis, Francesca Milewski and Bieler. The 400 free relay took second with Kearney, Julia Stobbie, Orem and Bieler.
In individual events, Darien swimmers who finished in the top eight included Courtney Ferreira (eighth, 200 freestyle); Orem (second, 200-yard individual medley); Leuis (third, 200 individual medley; second, 100 breaststroke); Kearney (sixth, 200 IM; fourth, 100 butterfly); Lizzie Fitzpatrick (second, diving); Caroline Ashcraft (seventh, diving); Carly Berizzi (fifth, 100 butterfly); Rebecca Liu (eighth, 100 butterfly); Bieler (third, 100 freestyle); Stobbie (fifth, 500 freestyle); Claire Treesh (sixth, 100 backstroke); Kirby (third, 100 breaststroke); and Victoria Chao (sixth, 100 breaststroke).
