Darien Girls Volleyball Extends Winning Streak

DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien varsity girls volleyball team kept its winning streak going with Friday a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-21, 25-17) of Greenwich High School. The win took the Blue Wave to 10-0 for the season.

Celia Martzolf had 12 service points, 33 assists and five digs for Darien. Riley Sousa had nine kills, nine digs and six service points. Kelly Kosnik had 10 kills, seven service points and 12 digs. Lauren Pryor had nine digs, one kill and seven service points.

The first of the three games went down to the wire. With the game tied at 20, Darien scored four points, only to be matched by Greenwich for each one to tie the game at 24. Sousa then scored twice in a row for Darien to win it, 26-24.

Greenwich had a brief lead in the second game before Darien pulled ahead and stayed in the lead. Darien held a seven-point lead at one point before Greenwich started to close the gap. The Cardinals were able to come within one point of the Blue Wave to make it 18-17, but Darien surged toward the end and finished the second game 25-21.

The third game remained very close until the end. With Darien leading 8-4, Greenwich was able to tie it up. The two teams remained within a point of each other for much of the rest of the game, until it stood at 18-16 in favor of Darien. The Blue Wave then went on a tear, scoring five points in a row. Greenwich was able to get one before Darien put it away at 25-17.

“Greenwich is always a good team. We knew it was going to be a battle, and they fought to the very end,” said Darien assistant coach Burt Takesue. “We stayed strong and aggressive and consistently played as a team. We were able to capitalize on their errors, and they did not make a lot.”

Darien will next play at Staples High School at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
