Darien High Seniors Qualify For National Rowing Championship

DARIEN, Conn. - Darien High School seniors Taylor Stauffer and Alex Sedlack are among the 10 athletes from Norwalk River Rowing who qualified for the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Norwalk River Rowing has a total of five boats that qualified for the National Championships at this past weekend’s U.S. Rowing Northeast District Youth Championship Regatta in Lowell, Mass.

Thirty-five of the Northeast’s top rowing clubs had 395 boats entered at this regatta.

Norwalk River Rowing qualified 14 of its 25 entries for the finals, which were held Sunday afternoon. A medal in a first varsity event brought with it an automatic invitation to the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Sacramento beginning June 13.

Stauffer and Sedlack together won a gold medal and, qualified for the Nationals, in the Men’s Varsity Pair. Their winning time was among the fastest in the nation.

In addition, Stauffer also won a bronze in the Men’s Varsity Quad, qualifying him for both races in the National Championships.

Norwalk River Rowing had six medals, winning gold medals in the men’s youth varsity single, men’s youth varsity pair and men’s youth lightweight four plus coxswain, silver medals in the men’s youth lightweight double and men’s youth second varsity quad, and a bronze medal in the men’s youth varsity quad.

All of the medaling boats except the second varsity quad – 10 athletes in all – are now headed to the National Championships.
