After breezing through the District 1 softball field, the Darien Tidal Wave 12-year-old softball team will now turn its attention to the sectional tournament, beginning Thursday. Darien won the district title with a dominating 13-2 win over Danbury on Sunday.
Darien went 4-0 in the tournament, and put Danbury away early in the championship game. The Tidal Wave scored six runs in the first inning and four in the second. The game ended after four innings due to the mercy rule.
"I thought we had a pretty good chance with this team,'' manager Frank Cicero said.
Celia Martzolf pitched a complete-game three-hitter with two strikeouts and six walks for Darien. She went 2-for-2 at the plate, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Tyson Maley went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI.
In the six-run first, Lauren Cicero walked and stole second. She scored on Sofia Imbimbo's RBI single. Imbimbo stole second and scored on Maley's RBI single. Martzolf's single scored Maley, and after three straight walks, Jordan Smith lined an RBI single.
Darien will play Fairfield, the District 2 champion, Thursday in its first sectional game. The Section 1 championship game is scheduled for July 23 at Darien High School.
"If we get good pitching, play good defense and put the bat on the ball, I think we'll be able to do pretty well,'' Cicero said.
